I made this list because:

a) White sage is becoming endangered

b) I can’t actually get it where I live

so here are some nice things you can burn to do smoke-cleansing which aren’t white sage.

  • just normal sage (i have a plant in my kitchen)
  • literally any incense you want
  • mugwort
  • cedar
  • lavender
  • sweetgrass
  • frankincense or copal
  • write a cleansing spell or sigil on some paper and burn the paper

if you’re in a situation where you can’t burn things (fire alarms and smoke allergies boo), then why not make a bottle of spritzy spray stuff?

cleansing spellsss! weeee~ ❤

Frankincense is actually severely endangered, as is sandalwood, being so popular as they are around the world. And copal is dwindling too, if I’m not mistaken.

Sweetgrass I stay away from for cultural reasons, along with white sage. European/cooking sage works just fine. (Although I don’t burn it much because my s.o. doesn’t like the smell.)

I typically use benzoin (for that church smell), juniper (Gaelic tradition), hyssop (Biblical tradition), mint (various traditions), and different types of holy water. There are lots of options out there.

I didn’t know that about Frankincense and Sweetgrass! Thank you.

Additional easy-to-grow/find herbs you can substitude for white sage are:

  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Peppermint
  • Marjoram
  • Vervain
