for visually, symbolically and astrally parting ways with the old in order to make room for and affirm what lies ahead. written for new years, but may be done at any time of the year. cleanse and ground yourself before and after this spell.
Materials
đŻ an almost finished/small tea light candle
đŻ a new candle
â¨(optional) old items from the relationship, habit, or period of time that you intend to release with love; something to write with and on to affirm the life youâre moving towards
Directions
đĽ set the smaller, older candle on the left. light first. place any materials or representations that remind you of the old relationship you seek to release beside the candle.Â
đš place the newer candle on the right. light second. you might want to write intentions, sigils or affirmations here for the reality that you are moving into.Â
đˇ the candles have now opened up a portal where you can speak freely and communicate with what you seek to release. talk about why youâre leaving them behind, why you are ready to move forward and into a healthier place. as you watch the older candleâs flame flicker and fade, imagine the past dissipating into the background of your consciousness until you no longer have residual feelings. shift your attention to the newer candle, watch its flame dance and rise and glow brightly. imagine yourself stepping into a brighter, more energetic and promising reality. affirm what you need to and peacefully part ways with the flame of the old candle.
âď¸ allow the old candle to burn all the way out. when you are ready to blow out the new candle, do so and affirm that youâve closed the portal to the past. it no longer holds you back from your progress and you are now within the new reality youâve affirmed.
Okay, so like most
people, Iâve got tons of herbs, fruit, veggies, etc. in my kitchen. Now,
turning your kitchen into a magickal one is as easy as learning the magickal
properties of what you have on hand.
So hereâs a basic list of what youâre more than likely going to have in your
kitchen, and their immediate magickal uses. Enjoy!*
Apple â unless youâre allergic, youâre going to have an apple in
your kitchen at some point. plus, theyâre easy to find (and cheap!) at the
market. theyâre used for love, healing,
garden magic, and immortality. apples
are also used to promote friendship,
and is the fruit of the dead. as such,
it is burned at Samhain to honor the souls of the dead. it is associated with Water, the planet Venus, and several deities such as: Aphrodite, Athena, Hera, Apollo, and Iduna.
Basil â everyone has this. admit it. if you have ever tried to cook
anything, youâve used this. and itâs a very versatile herb! according to Scott
Cunningham, itâs good for love,
exorcism, wealth, flying, and protection.
Itâs used to soothe tempers between
lovers, or burned to make a marriage
more harmonious. It also dispels confusion and fears and is worn to attract
money or luck. itâs typically associated with Fire and the planet Mars.
Cinnamon â this is another one youâre probably going to have. according
to Cunningham, cinnamon is good for spirituality,
success, healing, power, psychic powers, lust, protection, and love. if you burn it as an incense, it
raises spiritual vibrations and stimulates psychic powers. Itâs also used for prosperity and is a popular herb to use
in charms for that very reason. itâs associated with Fire and the Sun.
Coffee â yes. thatâs right. coffee has magick. and not just the
magical ability to wake you up for work in the morning. while Cunningham doesnât
mention coffee, a little bit of digging can tell you some of coffeeâs magickal
properties. themagickalcat states that coffee âhelps dispel nightmares and negative thoughtsâ, as well as âpeace of mind and groundingâ.
Marjoram â this is actually one of my favorites. marjoram,
according to S.C., is used for protection,
love, happiness, health, and money.
itâs particularly added to food to strengthen love, and is protective when
placed around the house. it can also help to dispel negativity and supposedly attracts a husband if you put a pinch in each corner of each room
of your dwelling every month. itâs associated with Air and the planet Mercury.
Olive â you probably have olives or olive oil in your kitchen, so
hereâs a little bit about them: olives and their oil are good for healing, peace, fertility, potency,
protection, and lust. they can
also be used for fidelity, marriage, or money. it is associated with Fire,
the Sun, and a number of Greek
deities.
Oregano â if youâre Italian-American, youâre familiar with this
particular herb. but you wonât find this in many editions of Scott Cunninghamâs Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs for
some reason. that said, itâs a pretty useful herb. itâs good for happiness, tranquility, luck, health,
protection, and to deepen love. it
can be worn to promote psychic dreams or
used for spells to bring joy. themagickalcat
says itâs also good for vitality and added energy. itâs associated with Air and the planet Venus.
Parsley â this herb is used for lust, protection, and purification.
it can also be used to draw prosperity and luck. itâs associated with Air, the planet Mercury, and the goddess Persephone.
Rosemary â uggh. what can I say about rosemary? itâs great. itâs
amazing. it can actually be used as a substitute for the majority of herbs (especially frankincense). S.C. says its powers
are for protection, love, lust, mental
powers, exorcism, purification, healing, sleep, and youth. itâs particularly good for cleansing and purification when
burned, and can even aid the memory when worn. themagickalcat suggests using an
infusion of rosemary to wash hands before any healing magick, or to use it in
bath magick for purification. itâs associated with Fire, the Sun, and Faeries.
Ginger â ginger is used for love,
money, success, and power.
according to S.C., eating ginger before a spell will help make them more
powerful. it also draws adventure and new experiences. the ginger root can be
used as a magickal token or poppet (or you can make a gingerbread person!). its
associations are Fire and the planet Mars.
Thyme â this is actually one of my motherâs favorite herbs to cook
with (and for good reason!). itâs used for health,
healing, sleep, psychic powers, love, purification, and courage. according to S.C., when placed
underneath your pillow, it promotes a restful sleep and chases away nightmares.
it can also attract loyalty, affection, and good opinions about the wearer. themagickalcat suggests adding a âthyme
infusion to the bath regularly to ensure a constant flow of money.â its associations
are Water and is ruled by the planet Venus. Â
Tomato â yep. a tomato can be used for magick, too. itâs good for protection and prosperity, and when eaten, has the power to inspire love. it can also be eaten to inspire creativity.
witchipedia adds that the tomato âcan be used in place of apples in many
magical spellsâ, or âin place of other members of the nightshade familyâ. go tomato!
itâs associations are Water and the
planet Venus.Â
Vanilla â letâs face it; if you like to bake, you probably have
vanilla extract in your cupboard. like nearly every baking recipe calls for it.
magick-wise, itâs good for love, lust,
and mental powers. it can also
increase energy if carried. itâs associated with Water and the planet Venus.
*this list is based on one of those twirling spice racks i got as a housewarming gift, and just some other foodstuffs i have lying around my kitchen. this is by no means an exhaustive list of the things i like to keep my kitchen stocked with, but itâs a good place to start.Â
also, the majority of the information was found in Scott Cunninghamâs Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, themagickalcat.com, and witchipedia.comÂ
a spell to help cleanse and declutter any area or aspect of your life, leaving you with the perfect degree of minimalism for you.
â˝ w h a t y o u w i l l n e e d âž
⢠one white candle of any scent, size, or shape
⢠a piece of paper
⢠a pen or pencil
⢠(optional) clear quartz of any shape or size, the clearer the better
â˝ s t e p s âž
(note: i prefer to do this during a new moon as a representation of new beginnings, and this spell will be more powerful during a new moon, but other than that the lunar phases should not affect this spell.)
1. (optional) reflect on what it is you wish to declutter with a clear quartz near your heart or head for clarity. this clarity will aid you when you need to think clearly about what is it you need, want, and will discard.
2. write down whatever it is you wish to declutter, whether it be your room, your mind, your closet, etc. or something much more specific, such as the middle shelf of your bookcase.
3. light the candle closest to whatever it is you will be decluttering.
4. let the candle burn for a minute, and quietly observe the flicker of the flame. once the minute is up, place the paper youâve written on over it, and let it burn. snuff out the candle once youâre done and let the smokey intent cleanse the area.
5. begin decluttering, and hold your clear quartz if you begin to feel overwhelmed. throwing out trash and taking out plates, cups, or other silverware is the best way to ease into this spellâs effect. you can move onto bigger messes later.
â˝ n o t e s âž
⢠sigils burned alongside the paper can be used in conjunction with this spell.
⢠this spell lasts until you go to bed, and can be repeated as many times necessary.
⢠this spell can be used as a foundation for a more specific, personalized decluttering spell. the clear and white colors allow for mixing and creativity to your heartâs content.
