I get a lot of asks asking about fitness witchcraft; what it is, how to do it, tips, etc. So, here is my consensus of witchy work out tips! I think combining witchcraft and fitness is a wonderful thing to do. It can help you stay motivated, get rid of excess energy, and help create more.
Beginning So, how do you get started? Well, this is pretty much up to you. Thereâs a lot of ways a fit witch can incorporate witchcraft into their healthy life style. Iâll mostly be discussing the basics of incorporating it into working out, healthy eating, and little tips here and there.
Routine/ritual – You can pretty much turn any routine into a spell ritual. All that energy you exert can be transmuted into the manifestation of your desire. This can work for any routine; your routine at the gym, for yoga, dance, hula hooping, whatever you do to workout thereâs usually a routine. Each part of your routine is more or less an ingredient of manifestation. For example; I have a weekly routine, if I manage to do everything in my weekly routine it becomes a catalyst for energy kind of like an exchange of goods – I do this for you and you do this for me. Just like some people do spells in steps, this is similar.Â
Invoking – If you think thirty minutes on the stair stepper, sweating through every layer of clothing you have wonât invoke Freyja youâre fucking wronggg.Â
Devotional Work – This kind of ties in with invoking. Whatever way you choose to exercise, you can do it for a deity. For example, when I do weights at the gym itâs often for Freyja or Thor. If itâs for Thor Iâll talk to him while working out and really try to push myself, any new weight that I add or reps are offerings to him and proof of the strength of my love! Or if you have more playful deities you can make a deal, I often make bets with Thor saying if I can add x amount of weight or do it in x amount of time he has to make it storm.
Healthy Eating – Working on being fit and healthy isnât only about working out, eating whatâs good for you matters too. You can use healthy eating as a way of kitchen magic and incorporating the properties of what you eat into your spells. I sometimes use it as devotional work to Eir or as a way of cleansing my body. I donât mean like a juice cleanse or anything, I just choose foods for the day that have strong cleansing/grounding/purifying qualities.
Weights/Gym/Cardio – I found weights to be particularly grounding and sobering. Itâs my go to for days that I really want to manifest a spell or be âput in my placeâ, sometimes I get so caught up with my anxieties and thoughts that I think theyâre much bigger than they really are and I need to be humbled. While these are my personal associations I find weights help with grounding, vitality, self-discovery, intrusive thoughts, discipline, manifestation, good health, strength, perspective, personal growth, and inner radiance. Itâs also associated with element earth or water.
Aerial/Pole Dancing/Hula Hooping/Yoga – I use aerial, aerobic, and balance exercises as a way to harvest and release energy. Granted you could do this with literally ANY form of exercise(itâs your practice) I just happen to like the feeling of energy release while these types of workouts. I associate these types of work outs with the elements water and air. I also find they help with emotional healing, creative inspiration, personal magic, spiritual truth, cleansing, release of negativity, inner peace, empathy, endurance, self-healing, and a release of bad habits.
Boxing/Self Defense/Martial Arts – Self-defense and martial arts have been something Iâve recently taken an interest in. I personally have mostly used it as a devotional act and as a way to build myself up. When I say build myeslf up, I mean that in every sense of the term, to be better as witch, to harvest more energy, to be able to harness more energy, to have a better mental and physical resolve, itâs a challenge to myself(although any form of workout can be). I personally tie it to the elements of fire and earth. I associate it with helping gain resolve, patience, strength, spiritual protection, ascension, persistence, activation of mind and will, life force, personal power, magic, vitality, self-loyalty, self-love, and inner radiance.
Archery/Fencing – While I can personally only speak for archery I feel like it ties into introspection and wisdom really well. Itâs a good time to focus on yourself, broaden your mind, and focus on silence, solitude. I associate these with the elements water and air. I also associate them with positive self-expression, enhanced communication, intuition, psychic openings, link to the unconscious, regeneration of hope, rejuvenation, self love, heart-centered awareness, manifestation.
Lepidocrocite – element: fire, water; properties: emotional healing, release of self-destructive patterns, love and empathy, soul retrieval, inspiration
Ocean Jasper – element: earth; properties: enjoyment of life, release of negativity and stress, relaxation, positive self-expression, physical and emotional healing
Deity Crystal – This is up to totally up to you! If youâre invoking or devoting your workout to a certain deity you can use whatever crystal reminds you of them.
Intention – Whatever your intention for your work out magic is! If itâs self love or growth rose quartz would be great. Think about what youâre hoping to achieve.
Herbs/Foods These are fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers, etc that I like to use in my fitness witchcraft. You can either include it in a sachet, cook it in a meal, or infuse your water/tea with it! I love bringing fruit/herb infused water to the gym to help keep me motivated.
Rice – element: air; properties: protection, calling on rain, prosperity, hallowing, and abundanceÂ
Blueberries – element: water; properties: sense of calm, protection, self-love
Tips
Keep in mind your sweat consists of sodium, sugars, and potassium. Use your own sweat as an ingredient in your magic, your body produces enough of it while working out.
Salt can be used for purification, healing, and protection. Sugar can be used for love, compassion, sweetness in life, and joy. Potassium can be used as an energy amplifier, for strength, will, and healing.
You can draw sigils on your clothing, body, shoes(I love doing the bottom of my tennis shoes so no one else can see it), water bottle, etc. to help keep you motivated and your energy strong! I personally find myself using a lot of runes and staves in my workouts because I feel it ties me closer to my gods. I personally use:
Sowulo for goal setting and success.
Fehu for action and motivation
Uruz for strength and power
Take a crystal with you to the gym! If youâre lucky enough to have pockets you can slip it in there but take into consideration what youâre doing that day. I stuck some citrine in a pocket on my backside once without considering Iâd be on my back half the time and ended up with a bad bruise!
Or you can add it to your shoe laces!
Put it in your bra.
Put in your gym bag or yoga mat.
Have some water before you go to stay hydrated! Better yet have some green tea or black tea; both are rich in anti-oxidants and have a small enough amount of caffeine to get you going but wonât make you crash.
Bonus: Crystal charge the water you plan to take to the gym. Double check that your crystal is safe to be used in water first! You could even use moon water for that extra magical boost.
Music! Make a playlist that makes you feel strong and confident. It doesnât even have to be witchy, just whatever gets your blood pumpinâ and you feelinâ good!
Glamours can be super helpful! Whether itâs something small to have you feeling better about yourself before you go the gym or something to help keep creeps away.
Donât be to hard on yourself. Weâve all missed a gym day or workout class. Itâs not the end of the world, all that matters is that you keep trying. Donât compare your progress to anyone else other than yourself. Itâs okay to go at your own pace.
Instead of âI will be successfulâ write down âI am successfulâ.
The future tense only means that your goal will never come to you, because itâs stuck in the future forever and there is no point in time when it should come true. Unless you write âI will be successful when I am thirtyâ the future will never come, because you have no fixed point in time.Â
If you write it in future tense youâre basically saying ânah, no big deal, this has timeâŠâ and your subconsciousness will postpone it forever. If you say that you are something there is not other option but to fulfill your wish and work towards it. Your sigils are stronger that way.
So relevant!!! And to all forms of magic as well! Putting something in future tense only ensures that it stays in the future tense!
writing has always been a passion of mine, and thereâs nothing i love more than combining personal hobbies with witchcraft! thereâs so many ways you can use writing to boost your craft, or use your craft to boost your writing; these are the ways i personally do!
honour whatâs special in your craft. if youâre theistic, dedicate a piece of writing to them. if youâre not, but you want to honour something else, you could write about the earth, or the stars, or absolutely anything. this would make a great grimoire or b.o.s entry!
learn to use automatic writing. this is a cool kind of divination that allows your subconscious/higher self, or spirits around you to control what you write. iâve tried this a few times and itâs quite fun, but iâve always wanted to try using it as inspiration for creative writing!hereis a much better post on it by @satinsouled.
start journaling. journaling is a great way to clear your mind and encourage creativity, but it can be really useful in witchcraft too! write about your witchy experiences however you want to, so you have reference points to come back to later
draw inspiration from your craft. similar to the previous point, if youâve had an interesting experience that youâd like to write about, why not turn it into a poem or short story? if you worship deities, write a story about them. create your own world of witchiness that stems from your personal experiences – your writing will always be unique and interesting because no one else will have had your experiences!
use tarot cards and readings as inspiration. instead of reading tarot like you normally would, write prose or poetry inspired by it to note down your reading. i think the best example by far is @tarotprose, one of my favourite blogs on tumblr and actually my inspiration to start combining witchcraft and poetry.
souped-up spellwork. its easy to work spells you find online, word-for-word, because you think thatâs how itâs âmeantâ to be done. there are some people who say their way is the âonlyâ way, but thatâs a toxic way of thinking. use poetry and creative writing to create your own, personalised chants, invocations and spells! your words will have more power for you than anyone elseâs, and youâll probably find your spells will work much better if you put your own personal touch into them.
iâm really trying to get back into writing, so if anyone has any poetry prompts please send them to my writeblr @aghostwrites! if you have any more suggestions please reblog with them, i always want to hear your opinions on what topics mean to you in your craft. happy witching!
if you enjoy my content, and would like to support me, please click here to visit my store! i offer in depth tarot readings, tarot bags, custom sigils and patches all at very decent prices. this store is my only source of income and itâs currently paying for rent, food, bills, my dogs operation and a new car. if you can, please help! any amount of support means the world
From simple love spells to glamours and hexes, wax seal charms are a powerful and versatile tool for any witchâs arsenal. Small, inconspicuous, and easy to hide, these simple charms are useful for nearly any type of magick.
First, you will need a smooth work surface (I used the bottom of a ceramic bowl). Fold a small envelope from a square of paper. You want the envelope to be the same size as or smaller than the wax seal to ensure complete wax coverage.
Next, write your intent (or draw a sigil) on the inside of the envelope. Keep it simple or write very small.
You can add a small pinch of herbs (or a taglock) if you like, but try not to use too much or the charm wonât flatten and may not seal correctly.
Once youâve added your herbs, fold the envelope shut. You may need to squish it a little to keep it closed.
Pour your wax over the envelope, making sure to cover any open edges, and place your stamp in the molten wax. Apply light pressure for a few moments and then allow to cool.
Once completely cool, remove your stamp and peel the charm off your work surface.
And voila! A small, portable charm that can easily be slipped into a purse or wallet unnoticed.
Oh! This is how I used to do my first few spells. Itâs perfect.
Here is a sneak preview of the project Iâm going to be posting to this blog. Itâs a book of portable altar spaces for my gods. I am a Hellenic polytheist and worship a LOT of deities, but Iâm also a college student who moves frequently and has limited living space to devote to permanent altars. So this is my solution! The pages pictured here are works in progress, but I think their use is fairly self-explanatory.
Iâm going to be putting together a more detailed instructional series of posts on how to make one of these books for yourself. But the guide will mostly be suggestions, feel free to personalize the project any way you want.
And while obviously my examples are going to be of Hellenic gods, this guide is totally open to followers of any religion that it might appeal to!
Substitutions in magick and spellwork is where you replace an ingredient for a spell with another due to lack of the listed ingredient. This is often done when a witch does not have specific plants, herbs or crystals on hand for when working a spell. This is a very common practice especially when individuals are on a budget or are still âin the forestâ so unable to get specific ingredients. This is also done when a spell calls for an obscure or hard to find or even endangered herb/plant such as white sage, mugwort, nightshade, wormwood, wolfsbane and other harder to come by plants that one could not normally find in a store or local gardens.
General Substitution:
White Candles for any candle color
Rosemary for any herb/plant
Table Salt for any salt
Tap Water for any water
Clear Quartz for any crystal
Black Tea for any tea
Rose for any flower
Tobacco for any toxic herb/plant
Sage Incense for any incense
Olive Oil for any oil/carrier oil
Frankincense for any gum resin
Lemon for any citrus
Apple for any fruit
There are things in each âcategoryâ of ingredients for spells that are used for general over all substitution. Though these ingredients below can substitute for anything in their given category it does not mean that they are the best items to use for substitution in every spell. Why is that? Simply because each ingredient has different correspondences and though these items are âgeneralâ they have their own correspondences which can very much be different from what the spell is corresponding to.
An Example: Rosemary corresponds with protection, love, lust, mental powers, exorcism, purification, healing, sleep, youth. If you are using it in a spell for money it may not work as well as it would to substitute the missing herb with another herb that corresponds with money, wealth and prosperity. This is why the list above is simply for if you are in a pinch and you have absolutely nothing else to substitute in for it.
This is why it is better to go with intent based substitutions, for they tend to correspond better with the spell and are more likely to be successful. It is very easy to figure out other ingredients that work with a spell by seeing if the ingredient corresponds with the intent, such as does this crystal correspond with love in anyway? If so it is a good substitute for a love spell, if it doesnât then it is a poor choice. This part is where you need to research yourself to ensure you are substituting things properly. Research the correspondences of what you have and see if they match with the spell you wish to find a substitute for.
Reworking
Reworking is the process of changing the actions, procedures and steps of a spell to cater to either oneâs own situation or to work with ingredients that have been substituted or are missing. Reworking works hand and hand with substitution. The reason this is, is because sometimes when we substitute ingredients we can no longer use the same processes done in the spell. This is common when we substitute something such as a water safe crystal with a non-water safe crystal for a potion or substituting an edible plant with a toxic one in an edible spell.
Here is an example scenario that will show us both the process of standard substitution and reworking.
A Spell for Protection requires you to have a bowl of water and some aloe. The process of the spell is soaking the aloe in the water for a short time then rubbing the herb on your wrists and forehead. You wish to do this spell but you have come across the problem of having no aloe. Below are some examples of how to substitute with this spell and how to rework it when necessary.
Solution Example: You happen to have mint which also corresponds with protection. Mint is a non-toxic plant and it is good for your skin as well as smells quite nicely. So you easily replace the aloe leaves with mint leaves instead and go about the spell as the steps instructs. This is an example of substitution that does not require any sort of reworking.
Solution Example: You have blueberries which correspond with protection that you can use though you would rather not rub blueberries onto your skin leaving a sticky stained mess. This is where reworking is required. Blueberries are edible so instead you soak the blueberries in the water and instead eat the blueberries and then use the water to anoint yourself.
Solution Example: You have wolfsbane but itâs highly toxic and should definitely not be soaked in water, rubbed on your skin or ingested. This is a prime example of absolutely having to rework the spell for safety reasons. In this case it would perhaps be best to have the wolfsbane in a bowl and use its energy to mentally anoint yourself. This requires most likely reworking most if not all of the spell.
Reworking actions in witchcraft without substituting ingredients. This is most common due to a personâs situation or location making certain spells difficult to do. A very common example of this type of reworking would be reworking a spell to not have a burning process due to the witch being unable to use fire or burn objects due to their situation such as apartment or dorm living, lung sensitivity to smoke or having their own doubts about being able to work safely with fire due to one reason or another. Below are some suggested reworking actions for common things that some people are unable to do for one reason or another.
Substitutes for Burning: tearing/shredding, soaking in water (if safe), burying (if safe), pouring ink onto, scribbling out, erasing, crumpling or crushing, painting over, pouring wax over, cutting up via scissors, taping up
Substitutes for Ingestion: water soaking, meditation with item nearby, energy work via harnessing the itemâs energy, burning (if safe), touch/holding (if safe)
Substitutes for Speaking/Chanting: thought/mental chanting, written word, gesture/sign language, listening to music with lyrics that correspond with spell/intent, air writing with finger
Reworking for Spoonies
Often spells can be too draining for those with âlimited spoonsâ to use. In these cases, reworking a spell may often become necessary to make it easier on the witch casting it. In cases of this, certain gestures or steps may be too draining or difficult for the witch to perform due to physical or mental health. First off, this is nothing to be ashamed of, itâs okay if some things make you too uncomfortable or are just too difficult for you to do. Thereâs no reason to feel like you canât do spellwork because of it. You can still do the spell by reworking the areas that you have difficulty in.
An example of this could be that a spell requires a lot of movement, gestures and chanting to do. As someone with limited energy you may not be able to exhaust so much of it by moving around like that. Instead you could examine the spell and see why that part may be required, if it is a spell to bring energy or motivation it may be added as a step to help encourage and invigorate the caster but making it difficult for you. Instead you can in this case find something that you find gives you a bit of a âpep in your stepâ that wonât exhaust you as much. An example may be music, listening to exhilarating and upbeat music can get the energy flowing instead so removing the chanting and dancing with loud energy filled music playing as you cast the spell is an excellent solution.
Another example may be that a witch has some lung and breathing difficulties making it very difficult for them to burn things or use incense due to it affecting their airways. In this case, the witch can examine what the spell is having them burn such as a spell for money having them burn basil and chamomile. Instead this witch can choose to soak the herbs into water or place them in a bowl near an open window to let the breeze spread their energy. Or even simply turning the spell into a sachet or jar spell instead of a burning one.
Personalization of Spells
To personalize a spell is to put your own personal touch onto it. This may include adding an additional step, adding ingredients or substituting ingredients not out of necessity but out of personal preference.
Examples of personalizing spells:
Adding the extra ingredient of rice to a money spell because you see rice as very closely related to money in your own personal practice
Adding a chant to a silent spell because you prefer chanting to get into the âwitchy spiritâ of the spell
Changing the spellâs written language because it is not your native one/you prefer using a different language for witchcraft
Changing the sigil in the spell to one of your personal sigils that you have a better association to the intent with
Replacing clear quartz with citrine for an energy spell because you prefer the energy of citrine over clear quartz
There are many ways to customize and personalize a spell to make it so it works better for you on a personal level. It is something that you will find easier to do with time once you have discovered the ingredients and methods of witchcraft that you prefer doing.
*note: reworking/personalizing a spell does not make it fully yours. If you wish to post this reworked/personalized spell please link it to the original or source the original seeing it was someone elseâs work that you modified here and there for your own needs. Itâs just polite to credit people for their work.
Itâs not a secret that Iâm not a rich witch. So if I can cut corners and get the same results, I will.
What youâll need:
Toilet paper or paper towel roll
Tape
Wick or yarn
Wax (Soy, Palm, Bees, even Coconut oil or Shortening will work!)
Disposable Can or Jar
Flat Cookie Sheet
Saucepan
Water
Pencil
Alright first things first, getting your candle mold.
To the left is a paper towel roll, the right is the toilet paper roll. I personally prefer the paper towel roll cut in half; look how much more you get!
Next, get your tape and make a cross sticky side up like this
Stick your roll in the middle and smooth the tape flush against the sides. Now, take as much tape as you can and wrap it around the base with the rest of the tape. This step is SO important! If itâs not secure you get the mess I have below
Now secure your wick in the middle of the mold. Mine were pre tabbed so I had to tape them to the pencil to center them (Such a pain, by far my least fav partđ)
If you have yarn just tie it to the middle of the pencil, dip it as far as you can in wax, then place it in the middle of the mold like shown.
Now, get a saucepan filled a quarter of the water with water on the stove. Put it on simmer.
Place your can or jar in the saucepan (I used an olive jar thoroughly cleaned out.) Put in your wax little at a time to speed up the melting process.
Once melted, add in any color or scent and stir with a disposable utensil. (This is optional, if you want a simple white scentless candle then skip this step.)
Pour the wax in the mold carefully, hopefully it doesnât leak.đ€
Let it sit for a few hours to cool. If you have a hole in the middle(I did) just pour more wax into it and let cool for another hour.
Cut at the top where the seam of the roll is here
Sometimes they stick and other times it will unravel right off the candle.
Iâm finally looking to the future and creating posts I can link, instead of answering the same questions over and over. Itâs not that I mind answering them, itâs just that I usually donât have the energy to give you the solid answer you deserve.
Where to start?
I generally wouldnât recommend picking up where you left off. You spent a lot of time building up to that point, jumping right in is going to be a lot. I would recommend starting slow, and slowly building back up. Get a solid foundation back under your feet:
Make a list of the things that youâd like to relearn, and do one per day.Â
Start at the basics, even if you knew the advanced stuff. Act like a beginner again and relearn. Chances are, youâll learn some things you missed before!
Donât compare it to your old craft. Crafts and paths are constantly shifting over time, taking a break doesnât change this, time has passed and your craft will likely be different.
Do what excites you! Learn new things too! What drew you back into the craft? This is a great chance for a fresh start!
Drawing a blank? Hereâs some ideas of things to research/relearn:
Altars.
Astral travel/projection.
Astrology.
Crystals.
Deities (perhaps learn about a new pantheon!)
Divination (any type)
Local wildlife; birds, animals, plants.Â
Mythology (maybe local mythology and lore?)
Sigil creation and using.
Space; the cosmos.
Spell writing and casting.Â
Spirit work.
Warding/protection.
Whatever you want!!
Some recommendations if you feel stuck/hit a block:
Browse the baby witch tag and help some beginners out. They have so much motivation and inspiration, and itâll likely leak over to you (and youâll reinforce some of the knowledge you forgot you had).
Buy yourself something witchy (it doesnât have the be expensive, even just a new little candle you only burn for witchy things).
Find a friend who is also getting back into the craft, talk about your practices!
Look up some tips and tricks on overcoming art block/writerâs block and find a way to apply them.
Know that itâs perfectly normal to hit blocks and lose motivation (it happens to me all the time at least). And itâs okay to take as many breaks/hiatuses as you need.
