Head of Sekhmet

(granodiorite, 33.4 x 31.5 x 32 cms), from Thebes. Reign of Amenhotep III. New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1391-1353 BC. Now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The warrior goddess Sekhmet was conventionally depicted with the head of a lioness. To appease the fearsome deity and ensure a prosperous reign, Amenhotep III commissioned 730 statues of Sekhmet, some seated, some standing, that he set up in his temples in Thebes.
