Odd God Squad – Sopedu

Ah, who am I putting an extra candle on my shrine for this week? I’ve been having fun with Odd God Squad each week, and this time I got randomly given the name Sopedu. So, let’s take a little look into this guy’s life.

Sopedu has a few themes to Him. He is known as a sky god, the personification of the scorching summer sun, as well as a war god, and a protector of the eastern borders; for this, He earned the epithet ‘Lord of the East’. In the Pyramid Texts, Sopedu is spoken of as a child of Isis. He was born from Her as she took the form of the star Sirius. He is close to Horus for this reason; another hawk deity, and child of Isis. At times, the two joined forces as Horus-Sopedu.

Sopedu is generally depicted as a sitting hawk, with two feathers upon His head, and a flail over His shoulder. Interestingly, His hieroglyphs translate to ‘sharp ones,’ which connects closely to his hawk-form and His epithet ‘Sharp of Teeth’.
