Inlaid Diadem with Vulture and Cobra Uraeus, 18th Dynasty, reign of Tutankhamun (1332-1323 BC). Gold, glass, obsidian, carnelian, malachite, chalcedony, lapis-lazuli. Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes.
Howard Carter found this elaborate golden diadem on the head of Tutankhamun’s mummy. Its sturdy construction suggests use during his lifetime. The protective goddesses, Wadjet (cobra) and Nekhbet (vulture) are at the front, and the undulating tail of the cobra kept the diadem in place. It is one of the less formal crowns of the Egyptian regalia.
