The next time someone says “I personally feel uncomfortable with this God because they have myths about raping people” maybe let’s not dogpiled the person with the “it’s Just A Story Don’t Take it Literally” or “but the deity is good and was loved in antiquity” or any of the other usual nonsense.

If someone says they’re personally put off or uncomfortable, dogpiling them comes off as real shitty and often really victim blaming. They aren’t accusing other people of being bad or immoral. They’re stating personal discomfort. If that threatens you then you should be looking inward at why their discomfort puts your hackles up and makes you so insecure you have to defend youraelf against what isn’t even an attack on you. If someone is saying “x is a rapist so all who worship him defend that” then sure leap in. But “I personally have issues with being comfortable with this deity because of that” is something more often than not y’all should chill about.

Even if the myths are “just stories” stories have impacts on people. There’s a reason fics come with trigger warnings even if they’re just stories. As worshipers of these entities we’re interacting with the myths in a different way than just consuming them so we need to respect their impact is going to be more profound by virtue of that.
