If you heat amethyst, naturally or in a lab, it will turn into citrine. This is how citrine occurs in nature, it’s just rare to find citrine in nature.

If you hear someone call citrine “heat treated amethyst”, they’re just describing the process in which it is created, both in a lab or in nature. Calling it citrine is not false advertisement, that’s the name of the stone.
