Day 1 of Inktober: Anubis, the embalmer, the protector of tombs, the guide of souls, enjoying his morning coffee. For once the barista got the name right! His name is written in hieratic (think hieroglyphs as your formal type whereas hieratic is the hand-written form you use for grocery lists), and can be read (in this case) from left to right as inpu. A name should also have a determinative (a descriptive sign), in Anubis’ case a jackal, but the barista wasn’t THAT invested.

First mentions of Anubis date back to the Old Kingdom when the Great Pyramids of Giza were raised. During this time he was the most important god of the dead, only replaced by Osiris during the Middle Kingdom (around 2000-1700 BC). In the New Kingdom, when great kings such as Seti and Ramses ruled from Thebes, he was depicted in a crucial role in the ritual ‘Weighing of the hearts’, which would determine whether the dead were allowed to enjoy afterlife or be consumed by the monster Ammit.
